Complete Control

Complete Control is a middleweight robot that competed in Seasons 2.0 through 5.0 of BattleBots. It had a unique weapon system, with a clamp and a lifter both using the same system so it could grab, lift and even overturn opposing robots. It was built by Derek Young, who also built Son of Smashy and Pressure Drop. Complete Control was very successful, reaching the Season 4.0 middleweight finals and winning the consolation rumble in the final season. After BattleBots ended, it competed in Steel Conflict, retiring after losing to Knee-Breaker.

Complete Control's name was partially inspired by a song by The Clash with the same name.

Complete Control was revived by Derek Young for the BattleBots reboot on ABC as a heavyweight, also adding a flamethrower to the iconic lifting arm setup, however, it did not achieve the same level of success as its predecessor as it lost early in the competition. Complete Control also caused lots of controversy during the reboot as it used a net to immobilize Ghost Raptor's weapon, and nets were not directly mentioned as illegal weapons in the rules even though nets had always previously been banned for use as a weapon.

Complete Control did decently in the second Battlebots competition, defeating the eventual finalist Bombshell before losing spectacularly against Warhead. Derek Young announced that he is retiring from robotic combat and Complete Control will not return for another competition after ABC Season 2 on his Reddit AMA that took place during the airing of the season.

Complete Control's name was partially inspired by a song by The Clash with the same name.

Robot History

Season 2.0

Complete Control's first match was against Spinster. Before the match began, Derek added a carbon fiber panel on the lifter to absorb the damage from Spinster. Complete Control immediately attacks and the panel gets ripped off by Spinster and tossed to the other side of the BattleBox but Spinster lost a tooth on its weapon. As Spinster stopped spinning, Complete Control clamped Spinster and lifted it off the ground. Complete Control then takes Spinster over the killsaws and drops it there to be shredded. Complete Control then grabs Spinster again and flips it over. Spinster immediately started smoking and was being counted out. Complete Control won by KO at 1:15 and advanced to the round of 16, where it faced Super Chiabot.

As the two multibots were released from Super Chiabot, Complete Control went straight at Super Chiabot and pinned it against the arena wall. Both robots then moved toward the center of the BattleBox and Super Chiabot started spinning its disc, where it managed to hit Complete Control. Complete Control then managed to grab Super Chiabot and lift it completely off the ground. Complete Control takes Super Chiabot to the killsaws, and drops Super Chiabot. Complete Control then tries to flip Chiabot over its back, but both bots end up upside-down. The match is halted and the crew put Super Chiabot and Complete Control upright again. Complete Control manages once again to grab Super Chiabot, but drops it. One last time, Complete Control lifts Chiabot and takes it to the killsaws again. Despite it unable to flip its opponent, the match time out and Complete Control on a 38-7 judge's decision. Complete Control was now in the quarterfinals, where it faced El Diablo.

Before this match, in response to its last match, Derek Young added an extension to the top half of the clamping arm in an effort to help the robot self-right if flipped over when tossing its opponent. At the beginning, both robots started pushing each other. Complete Control then grabs El Diablo and lifts it completely off the ground where the tip of Complete Control's lifting arm gets stuck inside the body of El Diablo before El Diablo is dropped upside down. El Diablo continues to attack, but by this point, Complete Control has lost its ability to drive around the BattleBox because its Pitman drive motors had fried, and El Diablo takes advantage by shoving it against the corner of the BattleBox. Complete Control feebly moves the upper half of its weapon as it is counted out. El Diablo won by KO at 2:51 and Complete Control was eliminated from the tournament.

Season 3.0

Due to successfully making it to the quarter-finals last season, Complete Control was able to skip the preliminaries where its first opponent was Randy Eubanks' Subject to Change Without Reason, who was looking for revenge after Derek Young's Season 1.0 incarnation, Pressure Drop, infamously hit S.T.C.W.R. after the fight had ended. S.T.C.W.R. got off to a good start, getting underneath Complete Control, driving it to the ramrods and then the killsaws, which sent Complete Control flying. S.T.C.W.R. got underneath Complete Control again, driving it to the screws, until it was finally caught by the clamping arm of Complete Control, lifting S.T.C.W.R. by its corner. S.T.C.W.R. was then driven to the killsaws, damaging its wedge and preventing all but one drive wheel from touching the floor. Complete Control then finally caught S.T.C.W.R. where it was driven to the killsaws, which did not operate for some reason, then to the pulverizer and finally flipping S.T.C.W.R. on its back. Then Complete Control tossed the incapacitated S.T.C.W.R. again and S.T.C.W.R. was finally counted out. Complete Control won by KO at 2:37 and advanced to the round of 16 where it met Dan Bovinich's F5.

F5 got in a good blow on the front of Complete Control at the start of the match, and then the second shot from F5 took out the chain for the lifting forks of Complete Control, meaning it could only clamp down with its grabbing arm. Complete Control, however, did use his clamp to good use, stopping the spinner of F5 temporarily, driving it around the box. F5 got up to speed and struck Complete Control once again, only to get stuck on Complete Control's front. F5 then got in a few good blows on Complete Control, only to get clamped again, driving it near the entrance ramp. Eventually, both robots were suspended up the entrance ramp, temporarily stopping the match. After the match restarted, Complete Control drove up the entrance ramp again and was stuck there and F5 stayed out of the way as Complete Control was counted out with only one second left in the match. F5 won the match by KO at 2:59 and Complete Control was eliminated from the tournament again.

Complete Control wasn't finished, however, as it participated in the middleweight royal rumble at the end of the season. It did really well throughout the rumble, clamping down on Alabama Slammer and Village Idiot respectfully. It even got flipped over by SABotage while it was holding on to Village Idiot. Eventually it was righted as it still held on to Village Idiot, driving it around the box, almost flipping it over eventually. Complete Control managed to survive the rumble, losing out to T-Minus.

Season 4.0

Due to previously competing in Season 3.0, Complete Control was allowed to skip the preliminary rounds of Season 4.0, where it eventually fought Village Idiot. Both robots were moving around the BattleBox and Complete Control manages to clamp into the front of Village Idiot. Complete Control takes Village Idiot to the killsaws and Complete Control almost flips Village Idiot. Village Idiot escapes and Complete Control attempts to clamp Village Idiot again from the side, but Village Idiot slides out. Village Idiot then pushes Complete Control onto the killsaws and later pushes Complete Control to the pulverizer, where Complete Control takes one hit from the rear. Village Idiot pushes Complete Control from the side and takes it to the killsaws again. The tip of Complete Control's lifting arm got stuck on the side of Village Idiot for about fifteen seconds and Village Idiot pushes Complete Control against the spike strip. However, Complete Control's lifting arm got stuck on the front of Village Idiot and the match was stopped. Both robots were separated and the match resumes. Immediately, Village Idiot pushes Complete Control against the spike strip and Complete Control almost got hit by the pulverizer twice. Complete Control pushes Village Idiot from the rear and takes it to the killsaws. Suddenly, Village Idiot started smoking as Complete Control was pushing it from the rear. Complete Control goes forward and charges backwards at the front of Village Idiot before the time ran out. Complete Control won on a 30-15 judge's decision and advanced to the round of 16, where it faced Psychotron.

Complete Control grabs Psychotron within the first ten seconds and lifts Psychotron. Psychotron kind of slides off, but not before Complete Control inverts it. Psychotron drives directly into Complete Control's clamp and Complete Control flips it again. Psychotron gets under Complete Control's side and pushes it onto the killsaws. Psychotron runs away and Complete Control tries to clamp Psychotron again, but Psychotron slides out. Complete Control flips Psychotron again and Complete Control drives into the killsaws, which shear off a part of the side armor. Complete Control has its lower forks a little off the ground, which is giving Psychotron the opportunity to push it around. Soon after, Complete Control grabs hold of Psychotron again and takes it to the pulverizer. Complete Control lets go of Psychotron and takes a hit from the pulverizer. Psychotron pushes Complete Control and later gets caught on Complete Control's clamp again. Complete Control takes Psychotron to the killsaws and one of Psychotron's tires takes some damage from the killsaws. Psychotron escapes and gets underneath Complete Control before the time ran out. Complete Control won on a 37-8 judge's decision and advanced to the quarterfinals, where it faced Bad Attitude.

In the match, Bad Attitude went straight at Complete Control and drives into Complete Control's clamp. Bad Attitude takes several runs at Complete Control, hitting the bot and quickly retreating. Complete Control briefly has Bad Attitude, but lifts the top arm to readjust. Bad Attitude escapes in the process. Bad Attitude then backs up into Complete Control's clamp and Complete Control grabs Bad Attitude. Complete Control takes Bad Attitude to the killsaws and Bad Attitude's wedge gets hit by the killsaws. Complete Control then takes Bad Attitude to the pulverizer and the top arm of Complete Control is bent sideways. Complete Control takes Bad Attitude away from the pulverizer and flips it over. Bad Attitude drives itself over the killsaws and goes straight at Complete Control. Even with the arm bent, Complete Control grabs Bad Attitude and lifts it. Complete Control takes Bad Attitude to the killsaws again and Bad Attitude takes more damage from it's wedge. Bad Attitude went straight at Complete Control and was flipped again by Complete Control's lifting arm. Complete Control almost grabs Bad Attitude again, but Bad Attitude slips away. Bad Attitude takes another hit from the killsaws and Complete Control follows Bad Attitude around the BattleBox. Complete Control clamps Bad Attitude one last time and takes it to the killsaws again. Bad Attitude's side gets hit by the killsaws and Complete Control flips Bad Attitude again before the time ran out. Complete Control won on a 39-6 judge's decision and advanced to the semifinals for the first time, where it faced Zion.

Both robots went straight at each other and Complete Control attempts to grab Zion, but Zion slips out. Zion pushes Complete Control against the spike strip and Complete Control escapes right on the killsaws. Complete Control got it's lifting arm caught on the BattleBox floor and lifted itself. Complete Control pushes Zion and lifts it from the front. Zion tips backward, but doesn't quite flip over and lands on the killsaws. Zion drives away and Complete Control gets underneath Zion. Complete Control tries to clamp this time, but gets nothing but it's skirt, which slips away. Complete Control drives onto Zion's wedge and gets lifted by Zion. Complete Control turns around and goes for Zion. Zion turns around and starts to run away. Complete Control grabs Zion from the rear and attempts to lift it, but it just lifts itself. Complete Control still has hold on Zion and it slips out shortly after. Both robots were driving around the BattleBox and Zion gets caught on the killsaws. Complete Control pushes Zion onto the killsaws again and almost drives itself on top of Zion. Zion gets underneath Complete Control again and lifts it with it's second arm. Complete Control was pushing Zion from the rear and Zion drives itself on the killsaws. Complete Control got underneath Zion and lifts it again. Complete Control pushes Zion onto the killsaws again and Zion gets underneath Complete Control. Zion goes backwards and gets lifted by Complete Control again. Both robots took a small pop from the killsaws and Zion gets under the floor spinner, which lifts it off the BattleBox floor. Complete Control pushes Zion onto the screws and Complete Control backs away. Complete Control drives up on Zion's wedge and Zion clamps Complete Control. Zion takes Complete Control on the killsaws and Complete Control tries to get out, but it only lifts itself off the ground. The time ran out as both robots continued struggling to get unstuck. Complete Control won on a close 24-21 judge's decision and was now in the middleweight finals, where it faced the two time middleweight champion Hazard.

For the fight, Derek Young had welded a titanium skirt on the rear of Complete Control in an attempt to deflect the blows from Hazard's deadly spinning blade, and was planning to keep reversing into Hazard until the blade was hopefully stopped. The fight began fairly well for Complete Control, despite the fact its left skirt was loosened by Hazard's blade. Sparks were emitted, but Complete Control managed to push Hazard across the BattleBox for a while. Hazard eventually escaped, and Complete Control was shoved against into an exposed arena wall, tearing the sticker on the back of Complete Control and causing more sparks, before Complete Control was allowed to back out. Hazard continued to grind away, before the inevitable happened. The loose left rear panel was torn off by Hazard before the titanium skirt was torn off completely. Hazard then charged at Complete Control once more, where more pieces was torn off. Complete Control attempted to grapple Hazard with its weapon, but Hazard mangled the arm, leaving it bent and useless. At this point, Complete Control started to smoke and was debilitated in the middle of the BattleBox, likely due to frying its drive motors. Hazard took advantage by tearing off Complete Control's loose panel and sent it flying upwards, tearing apart the chassis. Hazard then went to the opposite side of Complete Control and did the same to its opposite skirt, only this one was torn off. Complete Control was then left completely destroyed, with its thumb slowly lowering down as it was counted out, becoming the middleweight runner up for Season 4.0.

Because Complete Control was completely destroyed by Hazard, Complete Control didn't participate the middleweight royal rumble at the end of the tournament.

Season 5.0

Due to previously competing in Season 4.0, Complete Control was allowed to skip the preliminary rounds of Season 5.0, where it eventually fought Wrath Jr. Both robots went straight at each other and Complete Control attampts to grab Wrath Jr., but it escapes immediately. Wrath Jr. pushes Complete Control against the spike strip and both robots started driving around the BattleBox. Wrath Jr. drives straight at Complete Control and Complete Control attempts to clamp into Wrath Jr., but it escapes and drives up on the entrance ramp. Complete Control stops moving and Wrath Jr. pushes it against the spike strip. Wrath Jr. goes back in it's starting square and shortly after, Wrath Jr. came back to free Complete Control and it started moving again. After more pushing from both robots, Wrath Jr. gets caught on the killsaws and gets lifted by Complete Control. Wrath Jr. gets underneath Complete Control and shoves it across the BattleBox, into the base of the screw. Complete Control bounces up from hitting the screw and lands on top of the pulverizer. As Complete Control was still stuck on top of the pulverizer, Wrath Jr. charges straight at the pulverizer and frees Complete Control. Complete Control gets caught on the killsaws twice and raises it's lifting arm on top of the rear of Wrath Jr. Wrath Jr. backs into Complete Control's front and pushes it into the spike strip again. Wrath Jr. later pushes Complete Control onto the killsaws as Wrath Jr. got underneath Complete Control with it's plow. Wrath Jr. then takes Complete Control to the screws and Complete Control escapes. The match ended with both robots getting caught on the ramrods. Wrath Jr. won on a 31-14 judge's decision and Complete Control was eliminated from the tournament again.

Complete Control wasn't finished, however, as it participated the middleweight consolation rumble at the end of the tournament. Alabama Slammer and Complete Control won the rumble overall and both were due to enter the royal rumble. However, because of an accident during the heavyweight consolation rumble, the rest of the rumbles were canceled.

ABC Season 1

Complete Control's only competition battle was against Ghost Raptor. Before the match, Complete Control's box was in inadvertently set on fire and had to be put out. This was cut from the TV airing. In the battle, Complete Control held in its clamp a present box which, unknown to their opponent or the producers, contained a net. As soon as Ghost Raptor broke through the box, the net inside ensnared its spinning bar. The producers halted the match for several hours to decide whether or not this was a legal move, since the rules disallowed some entanglements but didn't specifically rule out nets. Eventually, a rematch was called.

In the rematch, Complete Control drove quickly towards Ghost Raptor but hit a seam in the floor, causing it to jolt and stop, damaging them and causing control issues. Ghost Raptor took advantage of this and maneuvered Complete Control towards the wall, where it struck Complete Control with its spinning bar. However, the bar snapped. The battle became largely a pushing match. Complete Control managed to briefly grab and lift Ghost Raptor at one point and seemed to get back some mobility but not enough to make use of the grab. Ghost Raptor also managed to shove and slightly lift Complete Control at the very end of the match. Ghost Raptor won on a unanimous 3-0 judges' decision and Complete Control was eliminated from the tournament. Complete Control was not given a wild card meaning it was eliminated in the early stages of the tournament.

After the main competition was finished, Complete Control had a grudge match against Razorback. For this match, Derek added a piece of foam onto Complete Control's lifting arm in order to immobilize Razorback's spinning blade attachment. In the beginning, both robots went straight at each other and Razorback rips the foam off of Complete Control's lifting arm. As this was happening, Razorback managed to push Complete Control under the pulverizer. Complete Control backs away and activate its flamethrower before getting hit by Razorback's spinning drum again. Complete Control then managed to flip Razorback onto its back with its lifting arm and Razorback push it onto the killsaws. Complete Control went straight at Razorback and lifts it toward the killsaws. Complete Control got its clamping arm onto the left side of the flipped Razorback and tossed it back onto its feet. Both robots went straight at each other again and Complete Control lifts Razorback again. Complete Control got its clamping arm onto the front of Razorback and both robots were being popped by the hellraisers. Both robots moved to the corner of the BattleBox and Complete Control drove itself under the pulverizer. Complete Control went straight at Razorback and gave it another lift. Suddenly, Complete Control stopped moving after this and was counted out by the referee. Razorback won the grudge match by KO and Complete Control lost.

ABC Season 2

Complete Control's first match in Season 2 was against Bombshell. Team Mission Destruction actually had a small dustpan add on, in case Bombshell decided to use it's vertical spinner. However, since Bombshell chose the axe weapon, the team decided to use their weight for extra top armor instead. Before the fight, Bombshell's axe was adorned with an empty gift-wrapped box, referencing the box containing a net Complete Control controversially used against Ghost Raptor the year before. Also, Complete Control was joined by a small plant minibot, intending to have the minibot cushion any damage done by Bombshell's axe. Right from the start of the battle, Complete Control grabbed Bombshell, which escaped and managed to use its axe to no effect. After this, Complete Control's plant minibot got tipped over by Bombshell. Then after another grab, Bombshell managed to get its axe in a chink in Complete Control's armor. Meanwhile, Bombshell's drone Short Fuse crashed against the lexan wall, rendering itself disabled for the remainder of the match. Complete Control grabbed Bombshell, lifting it up and using its flamethrower to fry its internals. Eventually, Complete Control dropped a smoldering Bombshell in the corner before picking it up once more, taking it to the pulverizer until time ran out. Complete Control's impressive performance resulted in a win by a unanimous 3-0 judges decision. This win put Complete Control to the round of 32 as the 10th seed.

Here, it was drawn up against the 23rd seed and fellow veteran from the original series, Warhead. Warhead landed a heavy blow on Complete Control's left side, sending itself flying and disabling that side of Complete Control's drive system to leave Complete Control to drive in circles. This impact also stopped Warhead's weapon, so neither robot made contact for several seconds. Eventually, Warhead got its weapon working and back up to speed and attacked Complete Control's front, jamming Complete Control's drive train completely but flipping Warhead onto its back. As Warhead got in that hit on Complete Control, Warhead fired the wing mounted flamethrower, resulting in Complete Control being set ablaze. Instead of trying to right itself, Warhead decided to lift up onto its weapon's front and was able to drive towards Complete Control to get in one last attack, causing Warhead itself to be flung upside down. Complete Control was counted out and Warhead won by a dramatic KO at 1:26 in dramatic fashion. This meant that Complete Control was eliminated from the tournament for the final time.
